Everyone’s favorite tax-free holiday is just around the corner and if you’ve been holding off on purchasing school supplies, clothes and other items, your time is now!
This year’s sales tax holiday begins Friday, Aug. 9, and goes through midnight Sunday, Aug. 11.
While most Texans take advantage of this tax-free weekend to get kids ready for school, there are a host of items available that you may not know about including baby items, hobby accessories and uniforms.
Babies score in a big way this year. New parents can pick up cloth and disposable diapers, baby bibs and baby clothes. Saving money on diapers is a great deal and as babies tend to grow out of their clothes, you can stock up on the larger sizes you are sure to need.
Have a yen for looking extra fashionable as you hit the golf course or tennis courts? Head out to your favorite sporting goods store because golf shirts, tennis skirts and sports jackets will be tax-free. Hiking and fishing vests are on the list and everyone can stock up on athletic socks.
This is also a great time to refresh your work uniforms. Chefs, school, work, nurse, waitress, military, postal, police, fire and even Scout uniforms can be purchased tax-free.
A full list of qualifying items can be found here.
What about layaway items? During the sales tax holiday, you can buy qualifying items tax-free when you make the final payment on an item already on layaway or
choose an item and place it on layaway. What a great and money-saving way to whittle down that Christmas shopping list!
New to Texas and this great Texas tradition? Know that qualifying items must be priced under $100 per piece. Be wary that additional costs, like shipping, could bump your purchase over the $100 cap and therefore not qualify for the tax exemption.
On your mark, get set, shop!
